Grout Children Create Tiles in Many Languages

Photo0173 Photo0186Children across Grout Elementary have been glazing tiles this fall, and some children are writing words from their home languages on tiles. We are focusing on the words sun, river, leaf, flower, treebird, and insect.

We’ve had many wonderful moments in this process. A child writing in Russian and a child writing in Cambodian leaned over and compared each other’s writing with admiration. A group of six girls writing in Karen delighted in helping each other, chatting animatedly. A boy sounded out words in Maay Maay, deciding in spellings he thought his friends would understand. A group of first graders glazed tiles imprinted with the word for “flower” in many languages, and one child said, “my tile says flower in a language I don’t yet know!”
